Zomato’s logo on a mobile phone strategically placed on a plate

For the past 6 months, I have been working in notifications and have come to understand that it's not as easy as it looks. Crafting them in such a manner to get good opens is a bit tricky.

And when it comes to notifications, they are always compared to Zomato’s push notifications. It’s always a discussion in my team about how we can make our notifications more better, get more CTR, and make them more like Zomato.

So, naturally, I got curious and thought to dig a bit deeper into Zomato’s strategy. How are they getting those users back on their app? Here’s what I found:

  1. Personalization

1st golden rule of writing notifications is adding personalization. Addressing users with words like “you” or using their first names, creates an impact.

This strategy ensures that each notification is for you (the user). And, make it special for the user.

2. Generating Curiosity

Notifications have a purpose, that is, to make users intrigued and wanting for more. Zomato nails that! They provoke curiosity and interest.

Zomato’s notifications usually have a pun or just random gibberish, but these drive users to click and check what they have to offer.

3. Keeping up with Trends

Zomato knows that most of its audience is Genz, who knows trends. So, they are keeping an eye on the trends. As they are required to drive engagement, relevance, and connection with users.

4. Timing and Relevance

Sending notifications at the right time is necessary when it comes to push notifications. Zomato has cracked that. Its messages pop up when you are hungry or ready to eat.

Zomato has different kinds of notifications depending on the time or the day. If it's a Monday, they can send you a notification on feeling ‘Monday Blues’ or if it's really late in the night, they are gonna send you a push that will make crave food.

5. Using Emojis

As a writer, the major problem with notifications is the character limit. And, using emojis can do wonders to deal with that issue. Zomato knows how to speak the language of emojis. They use well-thought emojis that add a layer of fun and entertainment to notifications.

I know I have learned a lot from Zomato’s push notification strategy and have implemented them as well to get those juicy opens! Some of these may work depending on your understanding of the app users. So, why not try using them?

That’s all folks! Let me know your thoughts about Zomato’s strategy.
